Trust, Security & Ethical Use of LocalSend

LocalSend is built for private, offline file sharing. This page explains legal expectations, ethical use, open-source transparency, malware clarification, and user responsibility.

Ethical Usage Statement

LocalSend exists to make private, practical sharing easier for people and teams who already have a reason to exchange files. Ethical use means respecting recipients, minimizing surprise transfers, and keeping sensitive data on trusted networks.

Respect consent

Prefer receive confirmation. Use Favorites only for devices and people who expect automatic delivery.

Protect privacy

Share confidential files on private networks. Avoid auto-accept modes on public Wi-Fi.

Stay proportional

Send what the recipient asked for. Do not flood shared networks with unwanted bulk transfers.

Open-Source Transparency

Apache License 2.0

LocalSend is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license. The project is free to use, inspect, and improve under the terms of that license. Transparency is part of the product promise: no account wall, no ad network, and no requirement to route files through a vendor cloud.

Security design summary

  • Peer-to-peer transfers on the local network
  • HTTPS encryption for communication between devices
  • Optional PIN verification for receiving
  • User-controlled favorites and confirmation behavior
  • Zero ads and zero trackers in the product positioning described on LocalSend.dev

No Malware Clarification

LocalSend is not malware. It is a legitimate open-source utility for local file and message sharing. Occasional antivirus false positives can occur because the app opens local network channels and transfers arbitrary file types.

Integrity practices matter: download from LocalSend.dev package links, verify SHA256 fingerprints, and follow the antivirus warning guide if a scanner raises a heuristic alert.
